28 October 2016 in Zagreb @ MUZA

miCROfest is an international festival of microtonal music aiming to create an opportunity for the public to encounter microtonal music, microtonal instruments and theories of microtonal music.

The miCROfest program emphasizes the value and importance of Croatian traditional microtonal heritage, aiming to motivate musicologists and musicians to undertake research and analysis of traditional and contemporary tonal systems. Leading European microtonal music experts will attend miCROfest to hold lectures for all interested composers, musicians, instrument builders and enthusiastic amateurs.  At the same time, it’s a rare opportunity for the public to hear live performances of traditional and contemporary microtonal music.

miCROfest is organized by CAMA – Croatian Association for Microtonal Art, with support from the Republic Croatia Ministry of Culture, Zagreb – City council for culture and Croatian Composers Society.

Artistic director of the festival and CAMA president is Zoran Šćekić, contemporary, jazz and microtonal composer.

The packed miCROfest 2016 program introduces a microtonal adjustable guitar, non-tempered microtonal harmony, Croatian traditional microtonal music, Turkish (Anatolian) traditional music, Microtonal tuning of the keyboard instruments and microtonal scales for saxophone.  The concert repertoire presents pieces from contemporary composers who come from Germany, Spain, Turkey and Croatia and it will be performed by microtonal tuned harp, guitar, piano, saxophone, string quartet and an interactive playback of Federation bells from Melbourne.

The evening concert presents five world premieres reflecting the spirit of contemporary art and confirms that microtonal music is one of today’s most progressive directions of both music and musical instrument development.

Entrance to all festival events is free.
