a composer’s concert by Zoran Šćekić
📍 Concert Hall of Zvonimir Bajsić Studio, HRT
📅 June 8, 2025 at 8:00 PM
🎥 the concert will be aired on Croatian Television – broadcast date to be announced
The Dinaric Ethno Jazz Suite concert marks the culmination of years of work on blending Croatian tamburitza tradition with contemporary jazz expression. In this full-length program, commissioned by Croatian Radiotelevision, the HRT Tamburitza Orchestra, Vocal Ensemble Celeste, and percussionists, under the baton of conductor Matija Fortuna, will premiere a new original work by Zoran Šćekić.
This suite is inspired by songs and dances from the Dinaric mountain region and features ten distinct musical movements in a unique fusion of traditional motifs, jazz harmony, improvisation, and modern arranging techniques. The program also includes several new compositions that further develop the vocal-instrumental dialogue.
The concert will be recorded for broadcast on Croatian Television (HRT), with the exact air date to be announced later.
Admission to the concert is free with prior registration by phone at 01/634-3549 or by email at glazba.hrt@hrt.hr, on weekdays from 9 AM to 2 PM, no later than June 5th.
HOW AND WHY I ENGAGE IN THE SYNTHESIS OF TAMBURITZA AND JAZZ MUSIC
I have been working on the synthesis of tamburitza music and jazz for a long time. I first introduced myself to the Croatian audience in this specific idiom with a 50-minute composition written for Big Band and large tamburitza orchestra, titled "Igra, nebo i jabuke" (Play, Sky, and Apples), which premiered in concert in 2014, performed by the Jazz Orchestra and Tamburitza Orchestra of Croatian Radiotelevision.
The synthesis of traditional tamburitza music and jazz has always felt easy and natural to me, not only because of my formal education (I graduated in Jazz Guitar and earned a Master’s degree in Theory, Composition, and Arrangement) but also due to family heritage.
My mother played the piano, and my father played both the piano and guitar. On our record player, we mostly listened to records by Louis Armstrong, Gershwin, Chopin, and Zvonko Bogdan.
In addition, tamburitza music is also close to me because of the generation before my parents. Namely, my great-grandfather Mirko, on my father's mother's side, led a successful family ensemble – the Lončarić Tamburitza A Cappella Ensemble in which he played the bisernica, his wife Viktorija Kraljevac-Lončarić played the berda, their daughter Ljubica played the cello, another daughter Olga the bugaria, and the third daughter, my grandmother Vjekoslava, played the brač.
Given such a background, I believe it was only a matter of time before I would dedicate part of my work to the tamburitza orchestra, which I compose for with great joy and ease, especially since my main instrument – the guitar – also belongs to the same family of instruments.
DINARIC ETHNO JAZZ SUITE
The main part of the concert is the suite of the same name, consisting of 10 dances, chants, and pieces from the Dinaric mountain region. In 2019, I arranged these 10 chants for an expanded Jazz Orchestra at the Music Academy (MUZA) as part of the Harmony of Dissonance project, which resulted in a premiere performance at the Lisinski Hall, the release of a CD and DVD album, and the Franjo Ksaver Kuhač Award. Despite the great success of the project, I regretted that the order of the chants had been changed, which is why I’m glad to now have the opportunity to present all movements in their original sequence, but with new instrumentation.
On this occasion, I arranged the same 10 chants for a large tamburitza orchestra and percussion, further enriched with solo parts and advanced, unusual techniques more typical for classical guitar than for tamburitza instruments.
In addition to the premiere of this instrumentation, four more compositions will also have their world premieres at the concert, written for large tamburitza orchestra, vocal octet, and percussion.
"Sve se more u valove" (The Sea Turns into Waves) is a chant that is part of the Dinaric Ethno Jazz Suite but will not be performed instrumentally within it, as I wrote an arrangement for choir that will be premiered by the guest vocal ensemble Celeste.
"Dumboko je pod Omišalj more" (The Sea is Deep beneath Omišalj) is an arrangement that premiered at the Clash of Traditions concert at Lisinski, but in the Bajsić studio, the new instrumentation for tamburitza orchestra, choir, and percussion will be premiered.
"Bajka o Janji" (The Fairy Tale of Janja) is an arrangement of a folk song based on a text by August Šenoa, known as Fisherman’s Janja, and its premiere will take place at the concert.
"Badnjak" (Christmas Eve) is my original composition, also a premiere, in which I set to music a poem written by my grandmother, Vjekoslava Šćekić.

DINARSKA ETNO JAZZ SUITA

Dear friends and colleagues,
It is my pleasure to invite you to the premiere of the theater play "King Gordogan" tomorrow, 25 October 2024 at 7.30 pm at the Croatian National Theater. Zagreb.
The play was directed by Rene Medvešek based on the text of the same name by Radovan Ivšić, and in the actors' performance you can also hear parts of the recitative instrumental composition for choir and percussion that I wrote for the needs of the play.
Details about the ensemble and the creative team of the play, as well as the dates of the following performances, can be found here
I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting my recent work on the "Harmony of Random Irrational Intervals" at the International Symposium on Microtonal Music in New York. My presentation, titled The Art of Spectral Groups, will explore my research and practical methods for composing microtonal music, particularly focused on tones with random irrational harmonics. This study is based on spectral analyses of 64 Tibetan singing bowls and offers new insights into harmony and composing method not only in microtonal music but in music general.
Due to personal and professional commitments, I will deliver the presentation online on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 3:45 PM (CET). The symposium brings together microtonal specialists worldwide and features a diverse range of lectures, workshops, and concerts. The event is part of The Village Trip Festival held at the Sheen Center for Thought & Culture and Greenwich House, New York.
This year’s symposium includes a special guest appearance by Grammy-winning guitarist John Schneider, known for his work in microtonal music with special focus on just intonation. Schneider's endorsement of my 2015 album "Just Music" placed it on his “Best of USA” list, alongside notable artists like Brad Mehldau, Wynton Marsalis, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. It is a great honor to be involved in a symposium that will also touch on the legacy of Harry Partch, one of the pioneers of microtonality.
You can find the full symposium schedule, including links to all the presentations and concerts, [here] (link to symposium program). Additionally, for those interested, the festival's program booklet and a summary of my presentation are available.
If you are a member of HDS (Croatian Composers' Society) and find the program appealing, please feel free to contact me for any further details or questions you might have.
Looking forward to sharing my research and contributing to the exciting dialogue on microtonality.
Warm regards,
Zoran Šćekić
