Microtonal music is not a style direction but an intonation system. One of the definitions of microtonal music says that microtonal music is all music whose intonation system is not based on the equally tempered division of the octave into 12 tones. According to this definition, all music up until a century and a half ago was microtonal. Also, all ethno music is microtonal if performed on original instruments. Nowadays, with the advent of electronic music and the use of computers, many possibilities that musicians did not have before have become available.
This course is based on the book “Five limit intervals - theory & praxis” (Z. Šćekić) and the CD album “Just music” (Z. Šćekić) and the main topic is the Just intonation harmony.
"Šćekić’s work, observed objectively from a neutral platform helps us to unlock certain doorways, and move freely into broader landscapes."
Pat Martino
"Zoran Šćekić is a shining light and beacon for the creative music scene in Zagreb. Both classical and jazz musicians respect his creativity, knowledge and discipline in their respective fields, as composer, educator and as a curator. It is very difficult to do one of those well and Zoran has managed a life and career where he balances all three. I give my highest recommendation, and please feel free to contact me with any questions."
Jon Irabagon; Saxophonist and composer
"The beauty of his music is not only found in the mathematical structures imposed, but in the space between the notes and in the dynamic progression within the pieces. Šćekić masterfully crafts pieces that on the surface portray often lyrical, placid, and harmonic gestures, yet are richly calculated and complex in their construction."
PARMA Recordings; NH, United States
"If you think you know what albums featuring the piano sound like, think again. This is a very different sort of album in which the piano is presented in very subtle and peculiar ways. This music is wonderfully resonant and strangely perplexing. This album is... simply beautiful. One of the most impressive piano albums we've ever heard."

"Just music" presents Šćekić not only as a composer with a refined ear but also as a patient painter of sound. With this sound carrier (perhaps consciously, or perhaps unconsciously), he has presented an inspiration drawn from the conventions of centuries-old Eastern poetry, seeking beauty in simplicity, intimacy, lightness, and elegance."
Dora Dunatov, CANTUS No. 199
"The CD album "Just music" by Zoran Šćekić brings us closer to a piano like we've never heard before, emphasizing the beauty of its tones in a delicate and wondrous way. Grammy Award-winner John Schneider included "Just music" among the best CD releases of 2015, in the prestigious company of names such as Harry Partch, Brad Mehldau, and Wynton Marsalis."
